Leny Yoro has offered insight into how he is attempting to improve during his debut season in the Premier League, while revealing how Ruben Amorim's staff use a WhatsApp group to strengthen their defence. The 19-year-old joined the Red Devils last summer in a £52million move from Lille, signing a five-year contract with the option of a 12-month extension. Yoro's signing was viewed as a coup for Man United, with the club seeing off the challenge of reigning European champions Real Madrid for his signature.
After an injury disrupted start Yoro has made 15 appearances for Man United since making his debut in December, with the defender adapting to Ruben Amorim's 3-4-3 set-up. Yoro, appearing on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, presented by Qatar Airways, offered insight to the former Man United star in how he is trying to develop as a defender. Ferdinand asked Yoro how he prepares for matches and different opponents in the Premier League.
Man United's Leny Yoro has offered insight into how he is trying to improve defensively. Yoro explained to Rio Ferdinand that he employs a personal analyst to help review matches. Yoro, a £52million summer signing, has made 15 appearances since his debut in December. 'Education, that's an important thing, isn't it? Because I was thinking about it on the way up - what I used to do,' Ferdinand said. 'When I was playing against strikers every week, on the Thursday or Friday before the game, I said to the analyst, "Fill the iPad up with the strikers that I'm playing against, and I want to see their best clips and their moments—goals and assists, etc.".
'Is that what you're doing?'. Yoro responded by revealing Man United defenders are part of a WhatsApp group where they are sent clips of forwards ahead of matches by Amorim's staff. He also explained how he employs a personal analyst to help further his progression. 'Yeah, yeah, of course. It's important. We have a group on WhatsApp,' Yoro said. 'With all the defenders, they send clips of the strikers, their movements, their runs.
'And outside of that. I have one person who's doing really a lot of clips on the striker for me to know. 'I had already someone in Lille, so I keep working with him. [I am] especially looking where to run, for example if the defender has the ball, for a long pass. Yoro has been a regular in Ruben Amorim's set-up since recovering from a pre-season injury. Yoro admitted to mistakes against Southampton, which he said he has reviewed multiple times.
'Or for a cross with the first or second ball, everything is really important.'. Yoro also admitted he had struggled in a recent Premier League match against Southampton. The defender, who faced criticism for his display, acknowledged he had lost a number of one-on-one duels, despite Man United ultimately winning. The Frenchman claimed the experience had helped him a lot to improve, adding he had watched the one-on-ones around 10 times with analysts to understand what he had done wrong.
