Rio Ferdinand fears Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is set to make a transfer mistake in the final week of the January window. Most of the transfer speculation around Old Trafford has been on outgoings rather than incomings, with Antony leaving to join Real Betis on loan and several other players linked with moves.

English winger Marcus Rashford and Brazilian midfielder Casemiro are both expected to attract interest in the final week of the winter window after being frozen out by Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford hot-seat back in November. Amorim is, though, looking to bring in Danish left-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce and has been linked with a surprising move for Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku.

United have expressed interest in signing Nkunku as Alejandro Garnacho continues to be linked with Chelsea as well as Serie A side Napoli. Ferdinand does not see the sense in Manchester United selling Garnacho, however, and says he is one of the few ‘impactful’ forwards in the Red Devils squad.

Garnacho only turned 20 last summer but has already made more than 100appearances for United and has continued to feature amid speculation he could leave the club, playing 81 minutes of Sunday’s Premier League victory over Fulham. Asked if he was surprised Garnacho could leave Manchester United following the win at Craven Cottage, Ferdinand told TNT Sports: ‘I am. Where’s that spark coming from in this team?.
