Manchester United could see their £900million deal with adidas terminated if they are relegated from the Premier League. United currently sit 14th in the division and have won just two top-flight matches since Ruben Amorim became head coach in November. The Portuguese boss has failed to find a winning formula as he implements his methods on a sub-par squad.

Asked if United were in a relegation scrap following defeat to Newcastle, Amorim said: "I think that it is a possibility. We have to be clear with our fans. "We have to acknowledge our position," United’s head coach also told a press conference. "I think people are tired of excuses in this club. Sometimes I talk about relegation. Because our club needs a shock.".

United are seven points clear of Ipswich Town in 18th position but Amorim's words will hand supporters little hope they won't be dragged into the melee for the second half of the season. Should the worst happen, adidas have the power to scrap the £90m-per-year contract, per the Telegraph. The terms of the 10-year agreement mean the German clothing manufacturer are required to just give one full season's notice if United were to do the unthinkable and drop into the Championship.

An alternative option is reported to see adidas able to reduce payments for 12 months. That would see the fee paid to the Red Devils halved to £45m upon relegation. Relegation would leave to plenty of financial uncertainty. United earned £222million in broadcast revenue during 2023/24 season. Almost 80 per cent of that figure comes from the Premier League.
