Martin Dubravka will stay at Newcastle beyond January after positive talks with the club, but Miguel Almiron is set to join Atlanta United. Movement on Almiron’s proposed £10million return to Atlanta is expected this week and it is likely he has now played his last game for the Magpies.
But we can reveal that Dubravka will remain on Tyneside after reaching an agreement with club chiefs, meaning his move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab is on hold. The goalkeeper has started the last 10 matches in the absence of the injured Nick Pope and, while he had looked certain to leave after waving a tearful goodbye to fans earlier this month, the club decided that the transfer made little football or business sense. He is out of contract in the summer and his exit would have had little impact on their PSR situation.
We reported on January 9 that Newcastle would attempt to persuade Dubravka to stay, and Eddie Howe said later that week they were ‘hopeful’ of that being the case. It is thought the terms of his contract will now be improved. We understand the Slovakian had started to box up and remove items from his Newcastle home and said goodbye to neighbours earlier this month, with a lucrative offer on the table in Saudi.
