Mary Fowler is back in England and back on the scoresheet for Manchester City, but her NRL sweetheart Nathan Cleary is never far from her thinking. The Matildas star has returned to the UK after taking a break from international football and spending time in Australia with her family, and the family of her boyfriend Cleary.
And a Fowler special has adorned Manchester City's 4-2 victory at Aston Villa in the Women's Super League. Fowler's fine allround display at Villa Park ended what must have been a poignant week for her after her fellow Matilda Alanna Kennedy left City to join Los Angeles-based NWSL club Angel City.
But now the only Australia international left playing soccer in Manchester, the 21-year-old Fowler was evidently determined on Saturday to keep the flag flying high. Fowler, working her wiles on both flanks and even helping orchestrate from a deeper midfield role, was constantly at the heart of the action in a pulsating encounter.
Mary Fowler has made a successful return to football for Manchester City in the UK. It comes after she spent time away from the game, holidaying in Australia with boyfriend Nathan Cleary. Fowler posted a series of images to her Instagram, including a message to Cleary.
After celebrating her sixth goal of the season - already matching her tally for City for the whole of last season - she could also look back on a performance in which her pinpoint passing and crosses could easily have led to a couple more goals for the visitors.
