Meghan Markle has taken to Instagram with her first selfie video since returning to the app - but it has proved divisive. The Duchess of Sussex filmed a short clip from her family home in Montecito as she opened a gift donated by singer Billie Eilish for a family whose home was burned down by the Los Angeles wildfires. In the clip, Meghan explained how she had been in touch with a mother and teenage daughter whose home was "left in ashes" by the blazes that destroyed more than 12,000 homes. Among the 15-year-old's possessions lost in the fire was a Billie Eilish T-shirt that had been left in the washing machine.

Meghan told her followers: "I said, 'Well, I don't know, Billie Eilish but I'm going to figure out how to get you this shirt'. I thought of everybody that I knew, and I made a voice note and I was like, 'Please, can someone get this voice note to Billie Eilish'.". In the video, Meghan opens a package to reveal the singer had signed a box full of merchandise for the girl. "Let's keep supporting those affected by the California wildfires," the Duchess captioned the video.

Interestingly, Meghan chose to disable the comments on her post. But that didn't stop people from sharing their thoughts on social media. A number of fans spoke out in praise of the Duchess. "Wow you are so thoughtful and kind! What an amazing thing you did," one person raved. A second agreed: "I love how excited she is, so sweet to help this girl." And a third said: "I just love how she is choosing to be her authentic self. She is one strong woman. What a beautiful heart.".

However, not everyone was in agreement. "Someone's lost their home and she is gushing about how amazing she is for getting them some signed merch," someone remarked. "This disaster tourism has now turned into disaster merching." Another added: "How completely tone deaf is this...." And a third questioned: "Why not just do a good deed and not make a video about it?". It comes as Prince Harry prepares to attend the opening ceremony for the Invictus Games in Vancouver on Saturday, which will feature the likes of Katy Perry and Coldplay's Chris Martin.

The Duke is expected to be joined by his wife, Meghan - but his frosty relationship with his royal relatives, especially his father, King Charles, and brother, Prince William, means they will not be on hand to support him. Harry and older brother have been estranged since 2020. He is on better terms with their father, King Charles, but Harry and the monarch have still not seen much of each other since Harry moved to the United States in 2020.
