Melania Trump’s outfit sends a ‘calculated’ message on Inauguration Day

As Donald Trump takes the keys to the White House today, his wife, Melania, stands beside him. For anyone watching the Inauguration events unfold, it’s hard not to notice the striking outfit the returning First Lady has worn for the occasion. Opting for a patriotic colour palette, Melania chose a custom double-breasted navy coat by American designer, Adam Lippes, with an eye-catching matching wide-brimmed boater hat by Eric Javits.
Follow Metro’s blog for live updates from Donald Trump’s inauguration. Such a bold outfit has left many fashionistas wondering if the 54-year-old is sending a message on such a historical day. Some argued that the striking look shows Melania is saying she is not to be messed with.
One X viewer said: ‘Makes her look hard. But maybe that’s what she wants to look like today, all business. Don’t mess with me kind of thing. A second agreed: ‘She’s ready for battle.’ While a third said: ‘It exudes a “You’ve f***ed with the wrong person.”’.
However, others have pointed out that Melania’s dark colour palette, and the fact that you can barely see her face, suggest entirely different emotions. ‘It’s giving somber,’ one X user suggested. Another said: ‘Melania looks so gloomy and going to a funeral.’.
Melania does seem to be a fan of large hats for major occasions. In 2019, she wore a white Dolce & Gabbana dress and a custom hat by Herve Pierre to meet Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace. Shielding her face could, in part, be a reaction to the scrutiny that she receives being married to such a controversial figure. Back in 2018, Melania claimed to be ‘the most bullied person on the world.’ When pushed to elaborate she added: ‘One of them – if you really see what people are saying about me.’.
