Met Office issues 'danger to life' New Year's Day weather warning impacting millions of Brits

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for New Year's Day impacting millions of people across the nation. A warning for 'disruptive' 75mph winds will come into effect just 15 minutes into the new year. The yellow warning will apply to the south of England, the Midlands and Wales from 12.15am until 3pm tomorrow.
An alert from the Met Office said: "Strong southwesterly winds are expected overnight and during Wednesday. The strongest winds are expected across coastal regions in the west and south of the warning area, where gusts of 65-75 mph are possible. "Inland, highest gusts will typically be between 45 and 55 mph, but possibly 60 mph in places, particularly in association with the passage of squally cold front which will bring a band of heavy rain southwards. The wind is expected to ease quickly from the north through the course of the day as this cold front passes.".
It comes after the Met Office told people in the north of Scotland that heavy rain today could pose a 'danger to life'. An amber warning for the Highlands surrounding Inverness will be in force until 5pm this evening, as heavy rain developing through Monday night and Tuesday morning is "likely to cause some property flooding and travel disruption".
Three severe flood warnings meaning imminent river flooding have also been issued by the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency, alongside a number of flood alerts. Two urgent Environment Agency flood warnings are also in place in Scarborough, where high tides and strong winds are expected to cause "large waves and spray" this afternoon.
