Mikel Arteta has slammed fans who sent abuse to Kai Havertz and his wife after Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup on penalties by Manchester United. Havertz missed the decisive penalty in the shootout, with goalkeeper Altay Bayindir saving his effort. After the game, Havertz's pregnant wife Sophia revealed that she had been sent some horrific messages on Instagram that threatened the couple's unborn child.

One message said: "I hope you have a miscarriage." A second read: "I'm gonna come to your house and slaughter your baby I'm not joking just wait.". In response, Sophia said: "For anyone to think it's okay to write something like this is so shocking to me… I hope you are so ashamed of yourself. I'm not sure what to even say but please guys be more respectful. We are better than this…".

And Arteta has called for "action", with Arsenal reportedly bringing in a third-party investigator to deal with the abuse aimed at Havertz and his family. "It is incredible, honestly," Arteta said ahead of Arsenal's clash with rivals Tottenham on Wednesday.

"We really have to do something about it because accepting it has terrible consequences. It is something we have to eradicate in the game. It is dependent on action. On 27 December we win 1-0. Havertz scores a goal and the whole stadium is singing his song.
