MILLIONS of old-age state pensioners who retired after 2016 are set to receive an extra £471 from April. It comes after the Chancellor confirmed the triple lock guarantee in October, which means the state pension will increase by 4.1% in April. The triple lock promises that each year the state pension will be put up in line with whatever is the highest of wages for May to July, 2.5% or September’s inflation figure.

Employee wages grew by 4.1% in the three months to July, while the UK’s rate of inflation was 1.7% in September. That means that the state pension will rise by the earnings figure. Millions of pensioners who retired after 2016 will get their pensions increased from £11,502 to £11,973 a year - an increase of £471.

However, around nine million older pensioners who retired before April 6, 2016, will be paid under a different scheme called the basic state pension. Under the new reforms, the basic state pensions will also be increased from £8,814 to £9,175 a year - an increase of£361.

However, that's  £2,798 less than the OAPs who will paid under the state pension scheme. Meanwhile, only one in four pensioners get the new state pension, compared to three in four who receive the old one. If you are a man who was born before April 6, 1951, or a woman born before April 6, 1953, then you will get the old state pension.
