The garden or outside space at your home could become a health hazard unless you complete a crucial chore, according to expert Monty Don. Unless you’re an avid fan of gardening, you may think that the winter is a time to sit back and relax when it comes to chores outside. After all, it’s almost impossible to mow the lawn because it’s often so wet and isn’t growing that much. Most plants and trees are bare and dormant and the British winter weather rarely allows for time spent outside.

However, one of the nation’s favourite experts says there’s plenty of things you can be doing outside now to prepare for the coming year and to protect your plants and give them the best chance of beautiful blooms in 2025. But there’s one job Monty Don urges everyone to get onto urgently if they don’t want any accidents.

The 69 year old writer, gardening guru and presenter has shared his monthly jobs list on his blog for the really keen gardeners among us. You may not have the time to get through his extensive list but one definitely needs your attention now the weather is getting colder and that is cleaning down your stone and brick paths.

He explains why it’s important to do it as soon as possible, writing: "At this time of year brick and stone paths can be very slippery and dangerous. This is due to algae that grows on the surface, especially if wet and shaded and at this time of year they may stay wet and slippery for months.".

To safeguard you and your family he shares the ideal way to remove the algae: "The best way to reduce the slipperiness is to wash off the algae with a pressure hose (which can be hired by the day). When this is done brush in sharpsand. If the path is brick or stone the porous surface will absorb some of the sand.".
