A London borough will continue to set one of the lowest council tax bills in the country while doubling its network of CCTV cameras in a bid to tackle the threat posted by phone snatchers and drug dealers.
It comes as Richmond council, which set the fourth highest bill in the capital last year, said it also planned to increase its council tax by 4.99 per cent.
London boroughs with biggest bills revealed] The council’s new budget includes £2m to double the size of its CCTV camera network, from 100 to 200 cameras, including up to 40 new cameras in the West End, focused on Leicester Square and Soho.
It means that Westminster residents will pay almost as much to Sir Sadiq for services including the Metropolitan police and London fire brigade (£490.38) as they will for council services such as street cleaning and social care (£526.80).
Richmond, which was behind Kingston, Croydon and Harrow in terms of the size of its council tax demand last year, said 60 per cent of its spending went on social care for vulnerable residents.
