More than 200 double-parked cars block gritters in frozen Peak District

MORE than 200 double-parked cars line a road in the frozen Peak District — blocking council gritters. Yesterday several were towed and drivers who stopped to go rambling got penalty notices at Rushup Edge, Derbyshire. The cold snap and amber health alerts are expected to end tomorrow.

Britain was blanketed with early morning frost again yesterday as overnight temperatures dropped as low as -13.9C in Kinbrace, northern Scotland. Freezing fog swept the South East, including Castle Rising in Norfolk. Children leapfrogged snowmen in Harrogate, Yorks.

And a fire engine slid into the River Taff, Cardiff. The UK Health Security Agency extended amber cold weather health alerts warning of a rise in deaths across England until Tuesday. It will end the bitter cold snap after -18.9C in Scottish Highlands hamlet Altnaharra on Friday became the coldest January night for 15 years.
