Do you agree with our readers? Have your say on these MetroTalk topics and more in the comments. Given the vast amount of power and influence Elon Musk holds, the fact we’re even debating whether he performed a Nazi salute at Donald Trump’s inauguration is outrageous (Metro, Wed).
Fascism has become more and more normalised over the past ten years, through both words and actions, so that what was once unthinkable is now virtually mainstream. Already too many leaders are refusing to tell the truth – that Trump and Musk are fascists leading a fascist government.
We must remember that the things they do and the beliefs they represent are extreme, poisonous and ridiculous. We cannot and must not let it feel normal. If we let ourselves be desensitised to fascism, then it will take hold in our politics – and we know how that ends.
Imagine how this would’ve been seen ten years ago. This is unacceptable behaviour. None of this is normal. None of this is OK. Ryan Cooper, London. ‘He’s the son of Scottish and German immigrants’. Trump wants to end the constitutional right of US citizenship to those children born in the country of immigrants, specifically those in the country illegally or on temporary visas.
As the son of a Scottish immigrant and grandson of a German immigrant, will he lose his US citizenship and become ineligible to be president? Or just pardon himself? Frank, London. ‘The Donald will do it.’. UK politicians promised to stop illegal immigrants and send them back. It never happened. On his first day in office, Trump declared ‘a national emergency’ at the border with Mexico and that he would send troops there ‘to repel the disastrous invasion of our country’.
