Netflix has added all six episodes of a chilling real-life British crime drama that fans claim is ‘up there with the Post Office scandal’. A Confession, starring Martin Freeman as Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher, hit the streaming service late last year and is based on the true story of Wiltshire Police’s investigation into the disappearance and murder of Sian O’Callaghan.

Sian, 22, was found dead in Oxfordshire five days after she went missing from a nightclub in Swindon in March 2011. Her killer, taxi driver Christopher Halliwell, was sentenced to a minimum of 25 years in prison the following year after he pleaded guilty to murder.

But when he was arrested and interviewed on a hilltop during the probe into Sian’s murder, Halliwell also admitted killing 20-year-old Becky Godden-Edwards - even leading police to where he had buried her body in Gloucestershire in 2003. The storyline hinges on procedural errors by DSU Fulcher which meant Halliwell almost got away with both of his heinous crimes.

The series, originally aired on ITV in 2019, shows how DSU Fulcher was able to tease a confession from Halliwell in relation to both murders - but because the suspect hadn’t been cautioned properly or provided with a lawyer, the hilltop interview was deemed inadmissible as evidence by a judge.

Although there was enough CCTV and forensic evidence to prove Halliwell had murdered Sian, Becky’s case stalled and DSU Fulcher himself faced harsh disciplinary action. He quit Wiltshire Police in 2014 after receiving a final written warning for gross misconduct.
