Netflix has given Wednesday fans exactly five seconds of footage to whet appetites for the upcoming series two - and, needless to say, devotees are hungry for more. Spoiler alert - but to refresh memories, she was last seen leaving Nevermore Academy with her nemesis Tyler (Hunter Doohan) having been detained. And from the snippet, we can glean that she is visiting Tyler in the asylum where he’s being held. Essentially, she enters Willow Hall, they look at each other and then it fades to black meaning we really only get four seconds of footage.
Nevertheless, fans are thrilled. “OMG, I’m so excited,” one tweeted. “I don’t like it when my eyes bleed… show me more so I can suffer,” wrote another. A third added: “Can’t wait.”. The show was a critical success and also a hit with viewers, being seen by as many as 182 million households. Of course, fans will eventually see more than five seconds, but here is all we know for now.
Wednesday is a show based on the character Wednesday Addams, who was created by cartoonist Charles Addams 90 years ago. His 150 Addams Family comics were originally published by The New Yorker between 1938 and 1988. The story of the barmy family has been adapted for the screen multiple times, including into a 1964 TV series, a 1973 cartoon series, and a series of nineties films. Wednesday is the latest reimagining of the strange family’s story for the screen: this time the show focuses on death-obsessed daughter Wednesday, who is now a teen, as she navigates life as a student at a high school and tries to solve a series of murders.
At the end of season 1, after an absolute tonne of drama including a revelation of a secret identity, a series of murders, and a confrontation with a 16th century Puritan who has been brought back from the dead, Wednesday, who was travelling home for the summer break, received a text. She didn’t recognise the number, and concerningly, the message contained a knife GIF plus photos of Wednesday. It left the series on a major cliffhanger: who is the anonymous sender? And do they mean Wednesday real harm?.
Naturally, the scene has spawned a thousand fan theories. “Honestly, I have no idea,” said Ortega, speaking to Digital Spy about the cliffhanger. “I’ve gotten that question a couple of times now and I’m so confused… I don’t know.”. Netflix has released some party lines of information from cast and crew. “This season, Wednesday’s journey is darker and more complex as she navigates family, friends, new mysteries, and old adversaries, propelling her headlong into another year at Nevermore,” showrunners and executive producers Al Gough and Miles Millar said in a joint statement.
Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia Addams, said: “We look forward to exploring more Addams Family lore, and are excited to introduce an eclectic lineup of incredible new characters.”. The series will be back in 2025, Netflix has said. There is no additional information to suggest exactly when. The first series of the show was directed by noir legend Tim Burton. He will continue to direct and produce while Paco Cabezas and Angela Robinson will also direct.
The cast of Wednesday stars Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia Addams and Gwendoline Christie who plays Larissa Weems, the head teacher of Wednesday’s new school, Nevermore Academy. Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday Addams in the 1991 comedy film The Addams Family, stars as a botany teacher at the school, Riki Lindhome (Pan Am, Yellowjackets) plays Wednesday’s therapist, Luis Guzmán (Code Black) plays Wednesday’s father, and Fred Armisen (What We Do in the Shadows) plays Wednesday’s uncle.
Some big names are joining the cast including Steve Buscemi (The Big Lebowski, Boardwalk Empire), Billie Piper (Scoop, I Hate Suzie), and Evie Templeton (Return to Silent Hill, Lord of Misrule). You can also expect some new guest stars in Addams Family actor Christopher Lloyd, Joanna Lumley (Fool Me Once, Absolutely Fabulous), Thandiwe Newton (Westworld, Crash), Frances O’Connor (The Missing, The Twelve), and Haley Joel Osment (The Kominsky Method, Somebody I Used to Know).
