Nigel Farage today warned Labour ministers there is 'very deep disquiet' among allies of US president-elect Donald Trump over Britain's 'surrender' of the Chagos Islands. The Reform UK leader issued a new demand for the Government to abandon its deal to hand sovereignty of the Indian Ocean archipelago to Mauritius.

He urged ministers to instead hold a referendum among Chagossians about the future of the strategically-important islands. Fresh doubts have been cast over Labour's controversial deal with Mauritius after the African country's new prime minister rejected its terms.

Navin Ramgoolam, who was elected last month, said the draft agreement with Britain 'would not produce the benefits that the nation could expect'. But, speaking in the House of Commons this afternoon, Foreign Office minister Stepghen Doughty insisted the Mauritian PM was still 'willing to conclude this deal with the UK'.

He dismissed 'speculation' about the future of the agreement, which he said would 'protect our national security and our interests'. Labour made the shock announcement in October that it was going to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands.
