Two officers intervened following argument in Newtown before they were allegedly attacked with both men taken to hospital, force says. Two off-duty police officers have been assaulted in Sydney with one knocked to the ground and repeatedly punched in the head, New South Wales police allege.

Police said they were called to a brawl on Enmore Road in Newtown late on Wednesday. “Officers … attended and found a 25-year-old man unconscious on the roadway,” a spokesperson said in a statement. An off-duty nurse performed CPR until paramedics arrived and the off-duty officer was taken to Royal Prince Alfred hospital in a serious but stable condition.

NSW police said the off-duty officers had been walking along Enmore Road when they approached three unknown men arguing. “The two off-duty officers were assaulted with one of them knocked to the ground and repeatedly punched and kicked to the head,” the spokesperson said.

The three men reportedly ran from the scene before police arrived. The second off-duty officer, also aged 25, suffered facial injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment before being released. Police were seeking to identify the three men involved in the argument. They were thought to be aged in their 20s.
