Orchids, often perceived as high-maintenance plants, can actually be quite easy to grow if owners understand their needs. Unlike traditional houseplants, they don't grow in soil but cling to tree bark. With the right care, an orchid can bloom for several months each year and potentially live indefinitely, making them a great value among flowering plants. Plant expert Graham Rice from the Royal Horticultural Society has shared his top tips for getting an orchid to bloom more than once a year. Moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) are probably the easiest variety to grow at home. Some orchids can be tricky to encourage to bloom more than once, especially when grown indoors.

Rather than discarding these orchids when they fail to re-bloom, give them some attention and you might be rewarded with additional blooms. Graham revealed: "There's one easy trick that helps enormously: make sure that the temperature at night is lower than the day temperature.". He explained that it "doesn't take much", as owners simply need to reduce the heat by a few degrees to "kick the plant into flowering. Moving them to a different room in the house may be all they need but it makes a huge difference to most of the orchids we grow in the home.".

To encourage a houseplant to bloom, an orchid expert says you need to put it somewhere cooler, reports the Express. The expert says: "A day to night temperature difference of five to 10 degrees is necessary to trigger orchid reblooming.". They say: "When your orchid starts to send up a new spike, you can return it to its usual environment." Cooling it down at nighttime means orchids can save energy instead of using it, as their temperature fluctuates between day and night.
