With the Golden Globes behind us, awards season 2025 is officially underway — with just weeks to go until the Oscars. The Academy Awards are undeniably Hollywood’s most esteemed ceremony and the 97th edition of the event will take place in Los Angeles (where else?) in March.

Before the big event, here’s everything you need to know…. There’s not long to go until we find out which films and stars will be in the running as the Academy Awards nominees will be announced on Friday, January 17. Details are yet to be confirmed, but the nominees are usually announced in a live stream on YouTube at about 1pm UK time.

The long lists for some categories have already been announced and these will be whittled down when the official nominations announcement is made. Netflix musical Emilia Perez and Kneecap, a comedy-drama about the rise of the Irish band of the same name, are both on the Best International Film long list. The Best Original Score nominees could include Wicked, Challengers, Gladiator II and Conclave.

The 97th Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on the night of Sunday, March 2 — which for UK film fans means the early hours of Monday, March 3. The whole ceremony will once again be broadcast on ITV1 and ITVX. The broadcaster is likely to confirm its exact plans in the coming weeks. However, it broadcast last year’s event live from the red carpet before switching to the ceremony at 1am UK time.
