Christmas Party Time comes around every year and every year we wrestle with how to look cracking but not like a cracker, festive but not frumpy. Here are a few suggestions for keeping your party look modern and sexy:. THE MODERN TROUSER SUIT. The modern way to wear a trouser suit is either buttoned up, with a camisole or nothing underneath; or mismatching, with the trousers and jacket in different fabrics and colours.
There are lots of rich-toned velvet jackets to choose from: Marks & Spencer does a mossy green velvet blazer (£79, marksandspencer.com) to wear with a lace slip top and black velvet trousers – try Zara for good wide-leg styles (£25.99, zara.com) - or even smart black jeans.
Mango’s maroon velvet jacket (£89.99, shop.mango.com), is another winner. For a new trouser suit try M&S (£79 for the jacket; £45 for the trousers in blue velvet) or Jigsaw’s Ashby red velvet blazer with satin trim and matching trousers (£240 and £160, jigsaw-online.com).
This is pricey but a great shade of red and a dead ringer for that Nineties Gucci classic. Just don’t: Make the jacket black. Chic: Try a camisole under a velvet jacket. WIDE VELVET TROUSERS (£25.99, zara.com). Mossy green velvet blazer (£79, marksandspencer.com).
YOUR GO-WITH-EVERYTHING ESSENTIAL. A lace detail camisole or layering top (with sleeves) makes a suit or a velvet jacket look modern and sexy, transforms a cardigan from day to night, and put a layering top under a waistcoat and, bingo, you look cocktail ready.
