Scores of people are feared dead after an American Airlines passenger jet collided with a US military Black Hawk helicopter and crashed into the Potomac River at 8.47pm local time (1.47am GMT). There were 64 people on the Bombardier CRJ7000 regional jet as it came in to land at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport when it was struck by the Sikorsky H-60 helicopter, which had three people on board.
Many bodies have been pulled from the icy-cold river with hope of finding survivors slowly fading for families waiting for news at the airport. President Donald Trump has already questioned the actions of the military and air traffic control, saying: ‘This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented.’.
