The Nome Volunteer Fire Department said it was conducting an "active ground search" from Nome to White Mountain.
It said in a statement: "We are currently doing an active ground search from Nome and from White Mountain and have as much up to date information on the event as possible.
It comes as rescue crews continue to search for a plane that vanished from flight radar while on its way to Nome in Alaska.
A desperate search was launched for the Bering Air flight from Unalakleet to Nome after it failed to land as scheduled at 4pm on Thursday.
