Police are offering a £20,000 reward for new information that could help solve a historic Brixton murder case. James Akinwande was just 18 years old when he died in hospital after being attacked and stabbed outside Vox nightclub on January 16, 1994. The Met Police have now launched a fresh appeal for information on the 31st anniversary of the attack, saying that they haven’t given up hope of securing justice.

Detectives explained they were trying to identify a group of young men believed to be behind the attack and asked anyone who may have information to come forward. According to investigating officers, there were altercations inside the nightclub on the night of Mr Akinwande’s murder before he was singled out after leaving the club.

The police statement said James was also wearing a “distinct red and dark blue FILA jacket” which was stolen on the night of the attack and never recovered. People who may have witnessed something on the night of the murder from within the nightclub are being encouraged to come forward.

Detective Superintendent Katherine Goodwin said: “If you were involved in the incident, be aware that we are still looking for you. We are now offering a reward of up to £20,000 for information that leads to the successful charge and conviction of the person or people responsible.

She added: “Think back to 1994 – did you attend this music event? Did you witness the attack on James? You may have been younger then and got involved in something you were not comfortable with, or now regret not speaking out about. If you saw or heard anything, then please come forward to talk with us. It is really important we find out what happened on that night, 31 years ago.
