Thomas Kingston will be remembered for the “big smile on his face” say his family as they talked about his tragic death. The husband of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent’s daughter Lady Gabriella Kingston died from a shotgun wound after stopping medication prescribed by his doctor, a coroner found. Thomas Kingston , a friend of the Prince of Wales, suffered a head injury and a gun was found near his body on February 25 last year at his parents’ home in the Cotswolds. The 45-year-old financier married Lady Gabriella at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, in 2019 with the Queen and her husband the Duke of Edinburgh among the guests.

At an inquest into his death held at Gloucestershire Coroner’s Court last December, Lady Gabriella, 43, said people need to be warned about the effects of medications used to treat mental health conditions or more people could die. And now speaking to the BBC, Martin and Jill Kingston have spoken about their loss. Mr Kingtson said: “I would like him to be remembered as someone with a big smile on his face, while helping people to do difficult things.”.

Mrs Kingston said that on the day of their son’s death, they had lunch together. She recalled: “He was normal, he was fun. We were laughing about various things. There was nothing that raised any suspicion in our mind.” Then she told how Mr Kingston went for a walk and Thomas went to take things out of his car that he had brought from London but he then didn’t return. "There was a room nearby where he would have put all his stuff so we knew he'd gone up there, so that's where I went to look for him," she reportedly said. "When I went up it was all quiet and he obviously wasn't up there so I went back to the house and checked his room and all his bags were all ready for going back to London, so I went back up and that's when I noticed the locked door.".

Mr Kingston said: "When Gill couldn't find Tom and realised one of the rooms in the outbuilding was locked and that was, yeah... I had to break the door down." With a shaky voice, he added: "I would have difficulty explaining to what it was like without crying.". At the inquest, recording a narrative conclusion, Katy Skerrett, senior coroner for Gloucestershire, said: “Mr Kingston took his own life using a shotgun which caused a severe traumatic wound to the head. The evidence of his wife, family and business partner all supports his lack of suicidal intent. He was suffering adverse effects of medication he had recently been prescribed.”.
