Liverpool players and staff went on a leisurely stroll around the nondescript but elegant city of Eindhoven on Wednesday morning and the first thought when happening upon them was, 'Oh, there's the youth team'. In some respects, it was. With 12 first-team heavyweights left in England, Liverpool's travelling party to the Netherlands represented an ensemble cast of fringe players, teenagers on the brink of the first team – and then a few other kids plucked from the academy to make up the numbers.

Arne Slot did not care a jot about the result and he did not even try to hide that on the eve of this match. So although Liverpool lost to Dutch leaders PSV, this was a valuable night for the Anfield team, who topped the league phase regardless. Star men rested, rhythm into the legs of the back-up brigade and an unforgettable experience for some of the Kop kids to be part of the matchday squad for a Champions League game. Keep working hard and they will do so on nights that have more jeopardy in the future.

No jeopardy but certainly no lack of drama. Five goals in the first half alone in a topsy-turvy affair would have pleased Arend Slot, father of the Liverpool boss who last week complained that the Reds' win over Lille was too boring. He was watching from his couch in the Slots' hometown of Bergenthem, a two hour drive north from here. In the first 30 minutes, he might have been tempted to get the remote and flick over to any of the other 17 games on show across Europe – but then the goals started flying in.
