Rats and mice are known to burrow inside homes during the winter months to escape the cold, often causing alarm as they scurry around in search of food. Many homeowners may opt to lay traps or use poison to eliminate these pesky rodents, but this can pose a significant risk if pets or children are present in the home over the festive period.

David, a pest control expert from Eliminate Solutions, suggests that one of the most effective ways to deter rats or mice is to overwhelm their sense of smell. He explained: "Mice are very sensitive to smell. The reason for this is that they have a poor sense of vision so their other senses must be heightened in order for them to survive. If you want to repel mice from an area, you will need to use strong scents that will overpower their sense of smell.", reports the Express. Introducing powerful odours into an area can confuse rodents, making it harder for them to locate food and therefore less likely to remain on your property.

Not only will potent smells disorientate them, but they can also hinder their ability to detect predators, making both rats and mice wary of staying in one place for too long. So, what smells do rats and mice detest?. While it may seem odd, pineapple juice not only has a strong aroma but is also acidic and contains compounds that rodents find extremely irritating if placed near their nest.
