Freed double killer Brian Whitelock was not recalled to jail despite three incidents where he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol and attacked police in the weeks before he killed for a third time. The 57-year-old, who previously bludgeoned a man to death with a hammer in 2000 then started a fire to cover his tracks which also killed his own brother, was known to pose a risk to the public if he relapsed into drink and drug misuse.
But he reverted back to his old ways and a source close to the case accused authorities of 'catastrophic failings' by not recalling him to jail before he could strike again. Prosecutors say he was under the influence of alcohol and diazepam before he killed kindly neighbour Wendy Buckney, 71, who believed in second chances and repaid him with money and food in return for doing odd jobs.
The retired riding instructor, who was savagely attacked with a knife, table leg and shelf, and sexually assaulted, suffered too many injuries to count when she was brutally murdered at her home in August 2022. As Whitelock, who earlier spent 18 years behind bars for the murder of Nicky Morgan, 27, and manslaughter of his own brother Glen, 35, now faces a whole life term as a repeat murderer, it can be revealed he was allowed to remain at large despite incidents where he was under the influence of drugs or drunk.
