Rio Ferdinand has singled out one Man United star for criticism after the side's 2-2 draw against Liverpool on Sunday. With 20 seconds to go in the Premier League clash, Joshua Zirkzee cut back the ball in the area to Harry Maguire, who blasted it over the bar with his first-time effort.
Had it gone in, United would have been primed to win their first game at Anfield since 2016 after Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo's goals earlier in the half. Opinions were divided on who was to blame for the late miss - with some attributing it to Zirkzee's pass and others critiquing Maguire's finish.
Now, Ferdinand has weighed in on the situation and suggested the Zirkzee was to blame and that Maguire would've felt justified confronting the Dutchman post-match. Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, he said: ‘After all of it, I would have gone in the changing room and gone, “Bruv, what type of stupidness was that?! What type of pass was that?! We could have won the game!”.
Harry Maguire missed a huge chance to give Manchester United a last-ditch win at Liverpool. The defender blasted the ball over the bar with just second remaining on the clock. However, Rio Ferdinand insisted the defender was not to blame for the late miss at Anfield.
‘But Zirkzee is lacking in confidence so he [Maguire] ain’t going to do that. It’s detail, bro. You know what it’s like? Talk to somebody like you want to be talked to. Pass how you want to receive. Same thing.’. Ferdinand also took time to praise three United stars who helped battle for Ruben Amorim's side in the clash at Anfield.
