Rob Brydon reveals moment he was rejected by casting director due to acne scars

Rob Brydon opened up about the moment he was refused a role by a casting director due to his acne scars. The Gavin & Stacey star took headshots to give to casting directors when he was first starting out in the industry. At the time, he was desperate for any form of work and sent some off 'to this guy who cast TV commercials'. After he sent the headshots, he landed an appointment, which Rob said "was an achievement in itself".
Speaking on the Making A Scene podcast with Matt Lucas and David Walliams, he said: "When you take a photo front on with front lights, it blanks you out. You look quite appealing. So I go in to see that guy and he looks at the photos then he looks at me and sees my acne scars and he says, 'Oh, that didn't really come across in the picture'. "And he literally said to me, 'I can hardly send you in for a chocolate commercial. Eat our chocolate and you'll look like me'. Can you imagine that? I can't remember how I reacted, I probably went, 'Fair enough!' and 'Right, well thanks for seeing me'. Can you imagine walking out the office, walking down the stairs and back down Great Marlborough Street (where the office was)? Can you imagine standing there and going, 'Right!'".
During the same chat, which saw David and Matt back together for their first new project in 15 years as they released their podcast, Rob revealed which celebrities he gets mistaken for on a regular basis. He talked about the number of times fans had thought he was Strictly's Anton Du Beke, 58. He also claimed to have been mistaken for comedian Ben Miller, 58, too. However, David was quick to point out why he could buy into the Anton mishap more than the Ben comparison. They had been discussing who could play the Welsh actor in any production about his life, with David jumping in asking: "How many times have you been mistaken for Anton Du Beke?".
Rob, with his arms folded, said: "A lot. And he for me. And Ben Miller a lot." David quickly confessed he could see the Anton resemblance, but pushed back on the Ben comparison. "I see Ben a bit, but Ben looks a lot younger," he said. But Anton and you are similar sort of age, aren't you?". Turning away from David in a joking look of disgust, Rob said: "Incredible. Do you know I was in a car for an hour and a quarter to get here. And that's what I get.".
