Ruben Amorim reportedly smashed a television in the Old Trafford dressing room in a furious rant at his squad after Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton on Sunday. The result was a seventh defeat in 15 games for the Portuguese manager who succeeded Erik ten Hag in November, and a fourth reverse in their last five home Premier League games.
Amorim, who afterwards labelled his side “the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United” was reported by the Athletic to have been angrily gesticulating in the home dressing room when he damaged the television, which is used for pre-match tactics and needed repairing before Thursday’s Europa League game against Rangers.
He had calmed down before he spoke to the media on Sunday, although he pulled no punches in the assessment of his team as they slipped to 13th in the Premier League table. “It’s unacceptable to lose so many games. For any Premier League club, so imagine Manchester United? The opponents are better than us in many details. I am just here to help my players, but we need to understand we are breaking all the bad records,” he said on Sunday.
“In 10 games in the Premier League, we won two. I know that. Imagine what this is for a United fan. Imagine what this is for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that.”. Amorim, who had four and a half successful years at Sporting Lisbon where he won two league titles before arriving at United, has had the reputation of being a calm coach who rarely conducts post-match dressings-down of his squad.
