Sam Thompson has revealed he tried to call his pal, Pete Wicks, a staggering 15 times as he dealt with his heartbreaking split with Zara McDermott. The reality stars called it quits in December after five years together, with Sam admitting he'd had a "really tough month".

Sam spoke about his heartache with best mate Pete on their Staying Relevant podcast on Sunday, with the Strictly star admitting he'd been "off radar" when his friend needed him. Asking Sam: "What's been going on?", Pete, who is thought to have spent Christmas with Maura Higgins, admitted he hadn't spoken to his best friend after the split was revealed, explaining: "I went off radar for a couple of weeks, I put my phone in a drawer and disappeared.".

Mentioning the lack of contact with his pal, Sam told him at their podcast reunion: "It's been a real tough month. I've been going through some stuff Pete and I called you 15 times.". Apologising for his absence, Pete replied: "I did feel bad, I went off radar and I didn't realise you were effectively on the edge over Christmas.".

"It didn't feel right!" Sam insisted, adding: "Pete was in a really nice retreat somewhere in the world, having a great time, sitting in a hot tub being really wholesome.". Revealing when he did eventually phone Sam, Pete joked that "my favourite part was I asked Sam how was your Christmas and he said 'it was like being in a Christmas tomb. I've been sat in the house surrounded by Christmas stuff and I don't feel Christmasy.'.

"I had calls from our PR, our team, everyone saying you had non stop spoken to them over the Christmas period and said 'please can you call him, please can you call him.' So within 30 seconds after he'd gone through his stuff we just moved on and he started laughing, sometimes what you need is someone not to enable your depression.".
