Sir Elton John has been thinking of his death and how he hopes to be remembered once he passes away. The 77-year-old music legend has endured a number of health issues this year - having been seen walking with a cane at Derek Draper's funeral in Febraury, more recently revealing he lost his power of vision due to illness, and more recently still revealing he has been battling a nasty infection. While the star retired from touring last year following the conclusion of his epic five-year Farewell Yellow Brick Road world tour, he is still planning to release records and to keep busy in other ways.

This month, Sir Elton was unmasked as TIME magazine's Icon of the Year, and he reflected on being a father while speaking at an event connected to the award. The Tiny Dancer singer has been married to Canadian film producer David Furnish since 2014, and together they are parents to sons Zachary, 13, and Elijah, 11.

Despite selling over sold over 300 million records worldwide and being a champion of gay rights and the fight against AIDs, the star has a more modest hope that he will be remembered for his family life. Elton and David were in a civil partnership in 2005 and advanced to marriage once this was legalised in the UK - with the couple being one of the most famous same-sex parents in the world.

Speaking to PEOPLE at his TIME Magazine honours, Elton explained: "On my gravestone, all I want it to say is, ‘He was a great dad." It is not the first time the star has made this claim - and he is shown reflecting on his mortality in the Disney+ documentary film Elton John: Never Too Late.
