Outline Some of New York’s finest museums reopen in 2025 so it’s a good time to visit. The Frick will be back in business in April after a £227 million renovation, before Studio Museum in Harlem welcomes visitors to its new home on 125th Street later in the year. But there’s plenty to keep you busy right now if you’re planning a last-minute dash to make the January sales.

Waistline Start with NYC Restaurant Week (21 January to 9 February; nyctourism.com), which promises brunch, lunch and dinner bargains galore at 600 venues. Check participation with the restaurant beforehand and book in advance to guarantee a table. A year-round tip is King, in the West Village, run by Brit Jess Shadbolt, who trained at The River Cafe. For New Yorkers in the know, it’s the place to go for cosy dinners (on a menu that changes frequently, the hand-cut fresh ricotta ravioli, £22, is a delicious constant).

On the waterfront: the view of Manhattan from Red Hook Pier. Beeline Tucked away on the Upper East Side, a block from Central Park, The Lowell hotel is where certain British toffs stay when they’re in town. Opened in 1927, it’s immensely elegant – heavy silk curtains, wingback armchairs, bookshelves featuring works on European ceramics – without being ostentatious. It isn’t trying to be too contemporary, so not everything in your room will be turned on by the press of a button – and thank heavens for that. There is, however, a fireplace menu – would madam prefer eucalyptus or rosemary oil on her fire? A member of staff will be up to light it in a jiffy. From £694 per night (lowellhotel.com).
