Sky Sports bosses have identified Rebecca Lowe as their top candidate to replace Kelly Cates. Cates is set to leave Sky to become part of a new-look presenting team on Match of the Day. She will rotate hosting duties with Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan on the iconic show, after Gary Lineker steps down at the end of the season.

Lineker announced his impending exit from the show earlier this year, with BBC director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski searcing for a replacement ever since. He has settled on three people to fill Lineker's shoes, one of whom is Cates. The 49-year-old will step down from her current role at Sky at some point in the New Year. She had been a star at the broadcaster, working as host of their Saturday evening primetime game.

According to The Sun, her exit has left Sky bosses 'gutted' and forced them into a search of their own. They've picked out Lowe as a prime candidate to take Cates' place. Lowe currently works as the star presenter for American channel NBC on their coverage of the Premier League. She is a former BBC journalist and a highly regarded broadcaster by both viewers and executives.

It is said that Sky believe she’d be attracted by the idea of a move to help anchor their football coverage. Lowe also has a good working relationship with Sky's star pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher. The trio launched the 'It's Called Soccer' podcast last year, which sees Lowe debate topics from the world of football with Neville and Carragher. The merry-go-round was kicked off by Lineker, who has insisted it was the right time for him to move on.
