Stephen Hendry has named the favourite of his seven world snooker championship victories while speaking to new Masters champion Shaun Murphy. Murphy is a little over a week removed from his Masters triumph at Alexandra Palace, where a 10-7 victory over Kyren Wilson saw him win the Masters for the first time since 2015. ‘The Magician’ defeated Gary Wilson, Neil Robertson and Mark Allen on his way to the final, achieving a maximum break in the semi-final.

Hendry is familiar with the euphoria Murphy felt earlier this month, having won six Masters titles during his career. The pair met up on Hendry’s Cue Tips YouTube channel and Murphy’s attention turned to the Scotsman’s feats at the World Snooker Championship.

Winning his first world title in 1990, aged 21, Hendry remains the youngest-ever champion and won six more world championships by 1999. However, when asked which of these meant the most to him, Hendry had a surprising answer for Murphy. “The one where I beat Jimmy [White] a session early,” Hendry admitted to Murphy. “I’d won every match quite convincingly and I look back on that because it just gives me pleasure with the way I played. I dominated every match, pretty much.

“The other ones are obviously probably more exciting–final frames and things like that in the first and the seventh – but I kind of look at performance more than the atmosphere.”. A remarkable four of Hendry’s seven world title victories came against White, but the one he values above the rest is his 18-5 demolition of the snooker icon in the 1993 final. Hendry also defeated Murphy’s new mentor Peter Ebdon to become world champion in 1996.
