Tui Lolohea admits it’s “sad” to see former club Salford in dire straits. The Tonga stand-off, 29, can only watch on as the Red Devils endure their latest financial catastrophe. They need to sell stars to fill a massive £800,000 hole in their budget or won’t be able to register players for the new Super League season.

Huddersfield ace Lolohea spent three years at the club, playing in the 2019 Grand Final and 2020 Challenge Cup final. He said: “I do feel sad for them. Salford have a place in my heart and obviously gave me a chance. I had success there, being in two finals. To see what they had, to where they are now, it’s disappointing. I don’t know what has happened behind the scenes.

“I hope they do get to the bottom of whatever’s happening and bounce back from it. Because it is a good, family club. It is sad to see, especially so close to the season [starting]. You set goals and then all this starts to happen.”. Crisis-torn Salford must just hope they can make their Super League opener at St Helens on February 15.

They signed ex-Kiwi centre Esan Marsters from Huddersfield for 2025, a good friend of Lolohea. He admitted: “Esan’s there and Nene [Macdonald]. I’m also close with Tim Lafai and Jayden Nikorima. I haven't spoken to them yet. It’s a lot at the minute for them. I didn’t want to invade their space and be a nosey bugger.

“My focus is Huddersfield. But hopefully they can solve it.”. Giants have disappointingly finished ninth in each of the last two seasons but hope for better times under new head coach Luke Robinson. He stepped up from assistant when Ian Watson was sacked mid-way through the last campaign and has now had a full off-season to get his messages across.
