An adult education centre in Sweden was forced into lockdown on Tuesday as approximately 10 people were fatally gunned down with an automatic weapon. Rigberska School in Örebro, in central Sweden, went into lockdown after witnesses reported hearing "bangs, probably gunfire" as the school was evacuated. According to local reports, terrified students and staff trapped inside sent text messages to loved ones, with one staff member texting "I love you".
People and teachers in classrooms where escape was impossible were placed in lockdown. Emergency services said on X/Twitter: "A major police operation is currently underway at a school in Örebro. The police are urging the public to stay away from the Västhaga area, or alternatively stay indoors.". Swedish Police said this evening: "About ten people have been killed in the incident. We are currently working on identification. The total number of injured is currently unclear." At a police press conference held at 6pm local time, the force also confirmed the shooter is among the dead.
Prime minister Ulf Kristersson later opened a press conference by branding the incident the worst mass shooting in Swedish history. This live blog has now ended. As police operations continue in Örebro, the community is working together to support those in need. Örebro Mosque said it will remain open during the evening, and that imams will be on site for people who want support or "who want somewhere to go", Swedish news outlet SVT reports.
There will also be representatives outside the emergency department in Örebro. French President Emmanuel Macron says "France stands side by side with the Swedish people" as he spoke of his "shock and sadness" following today's incident. He added that thoughts go out to all the victims and their families. "Solidarity with Sweden," Macron said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sent his condolences to "all Swedes" following today's attack.
Taking to X, he wrote: "Our condolences to the Prime Minister and all Swedes for the terrible shooting at Risbergska School in Örebro when so many innocent people lost their lives. Our thoughts go out to the families and loved ones of the victims. On this painful day, we unite and share the pain with our friend Sweden and with all Swedes.". Of the six adults taken to Örebro University Hospital, five suffered gunshot wounds.
One of those five sustained minor injuries but the remaining four were seriously injured and had to be operated on. One of these patients' condition is still life-threatening, says Jonas Claesson, Director of Health and Medical Services in Örebro. Risbergska's campus in Örebro will be closed tomorrow, according to Swedish media outlet Aftonbladet. The closure, expected to last for the rest of the week, was reportedly confirmed by the municipal director, Peter Larsson.
Other upper secondary schools in Örebro will remain open, the outled added. Shocking new footage taken at the time of the incident shows the armed perpetrator appearing to bend down slightly to get a better view into one of the building's rooms. He then spots a man filming him from outside the building, and charges towards him, causing the man to call out in fear and run away.

Speaking at the press conference, Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer says he is recieving regular updates from police, who along with medical services, are now working to identify the deceased and notify relatives. "We all want to understand why. We will have to wait for those answers. In time, the picture will become clearer," Strömmer says.
The Prime Minister has thanked students and teachers at the school for the courage they showed during today's shooting. He also praised the emergency services and the police for their efforts, before saying his thoughts are with those affected and their relatives. "We also bear their grief", Ulf Kristersson adds. He adds that he fully understands that the shooting raises many questions and fears. King Carl XVI Gustaf has sent his condolences to those affected by today's incident in a statement released this evening, SVT reports. The statement reads: "It is with sadness and dismay that my family and I have received the information about the terrible atrocity in Örebro. We send our condolences tonight to the families and friends of the deceased. Our thoughts at this time also go to the injured and their relatives, as well as to others affected.
