A young girl tragically died after being hit by a stray bullet fired during New Year celebrations. Yanelis Munguia, aged 10, was in the car park of her family’s apartment in North West Miami-Dade, Florida, when she was struck. She was with her family lighting fireworks at around 1.30am as they welcomed in the New Year, when she suddenly collapsed to the ground.
Her parents rushed over and saw that she had an injury to the back of her head. They put her in the back of a car and were met on route by the fire service who took her to the Ryder Trauma Center were she sadly died. Police believe that someone recklessly fired a gun into the air and probably had no idea that they had hit the little girl. "Shooting a gun into the sky has consequences. Who paid? A little girl. What did the girl do? Nothing. What fault did she have? But that's the way things are," reportedly said family member Carlos Gutierrez.
Yanelis had celebrated her 10th birthday on Boxing Day and now her heartbroken family are planning her funeral. Her granddad Ramon Valdizol told how her death “hurts my soul”. He, reported CBS News, said: "Every time I came over, she was always happy to see me and now I can't bear to enter their home and not be able to see her again." Her family had said how they are also left struggling to tell her seven-year-old brother what happened and he won’t see her again.
The family are now calling for anyone with information about who fired the gun to come forward. "It is a great loss and it's a disgrace that a 10-year-old girl was killed by this bullet. You can only imagine how the parents are feeling and the family. A moment of joy turns into a tragedy. The public needs to be aware that you can not do these things," said a family member. "I'm encouraging people if you know something, say something.”.
