With hundreds of large superstores and thousands of smaller Express outlets nationwide, it’s essential to plan your shopping trips around their adjusted New Year’s hours. Here's everything you need to know.

On New Year’s Eve, Tesco will operate with reduced hours to allow its staff to celebrate the occasion. Larger stores, including Tesco Extras and Superstores, will close at 7pm, so be sure to complete your shopping earlier in the day. For those who might need last-minute items, Tesco Express stores will remain open until 10pm.

As the calendar turns to New Year’s Day 2025, Tesco will once again adjust its schedule. Most superstores will open in the morning but will close by 6pm, giving you time to pick up essentials or stock up for the week ahead. Tesco Express stores, as on New Year’s Eve, will provide extended hours and remain open until 10pm, making it convenient for quick stops.
Check the Tesco app for any changes to your local store's opening times. Several other big supermarkets will be closing their doors or operating under reduced hours on New Year’s Day. M&S and Aldi are the only other stores that will close entirely to give their staff a well-deserved day off.
Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Asda, Co-op, and Waitrose will open with reduced hours, so it’s worth checking your local branch. Anyone looking to do some DIY in the new year will be happy to know that B&Q will be open on January 1 (albeit with reduced hours).
