Summary at a Glance

If it erupts, Mount Spurr could impact the city of Anchorage and Denali National Park] “Clear views of the volcano showed no unusual activity over the past day.

Airborne gas measurements from the Spurr summit and the Crater Peak vent collected on Friday February 7, show no significant changes in gas output from the volcano.

Mount Spurr’s last eruption occurred in 1992, sending ash over the heavily populated city of Anchorage and halting air travel.

“Indeed, that’s where we are, based on the anomalous data streams that have come in,” Matt Haney, the scientist in charge of the Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage, told the publication.

If an eruption were to occur, it would be preceded by additional signals that would allow advance warning, like ground deformation and vents or openings at the surface where volcanic gases and vapors are emitted.
