A toddler was saved "in the nick of time" from falling into an erupting volcano in Hawaii, according to reports. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has issued a warning after a close call at Kilauea on the Big Island of the US state, where a young boy came within inches of disaster.

“In a split second, he ran straight toward the 400ft cliff edge,” park ranger Jessica Ferracane told the BBC. "His mother, screaming, managed to grab him just a foot or so away from a fatal fall,” she added. USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has said that the eruption is continuing at a low level within a closed area of the national park into this weekend.

“The eruptive activity could change anytime,” a statement on the website added. “The eruption can impact air quality in the park and visitor health and safety.”. Ms Ferracane added that the boy could not have survived the fall and reminded all visitors to respect the boundaries and laws in place.
