Gardeners are constantly battling weeds, which seem to sprout up everywhere, particularly on driveways, patios and lawns. Alison Riddell shared her tried-and-tested natural weed killer recipe on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page: "I've tried and tested this method. Use a gallon of white vinegar, one cup of salt and two tablespoons of washing up liquid.".
She advised: "Mix it and put on the weeds with a watering can. Within two days the weeds will die and after a week sweep them up." Alison added: "I have tried this and it works so well. It's not harmful to pets because no chemicals, I have a cat." She acknowledged that while new seeds blown in by the wind will always bring new weeds, repeating the process works wonders.
"It's the best natural weed killer I've tried," she concluded. White vinegar is effective due to its acetic acid content, making it an excellent choice for clearing driveways and patios, reports the Express. Gena Lorraine, a gardening expert at Fantastic Services, recommends diluting white vinegar for optimal use, suggesting: "The best possible proportion here is one part vinegar and two parts water. Then just pour it over the cracks, aiming for the middle sections of the weeds.".
During summer, the sun aids in drying out the weeds in about an hour, but winter may require more time. Other users, like Lisa Timson, recommend boiling water as a cheap and instant weed killer, especially effective on driveway weeds: "Just use boiling water straight from the kettle, they will be shocked and shrivel up.".
