Trump’s speech promised to ‘wave magic wand’ to fix America’s problems

President Donald Trump‘s second inaugural address featured similar themes to his first: a sweeping indictment of the country he inherited and grand promises to fix its problems. Eight years ago, Trump described ‘American carnage’ and promised to end it immediately. Today, he declared that the country’s ‘decline’ would end immediately.
‘The golden age of America begins right now,’ Trump said. ‘From this day forward, our country will flourish.’. But historian and propaganda analyst Ian Garner told Metro that this statement and others in Trump’s speech are just another play on the idea Trump has sold since 2016 – that modern-day America is ‘degenerate’ and less than it once was.
‘The promise of Trump has always been that he would bring everything back that Americans have ever wanted and dreamed could be possible, but it’s going to be even better. ‘And this has recalled some of the promises of 20th-century strongman leaders,’ Mr Garner explained.
‘His speech recalled the populism, the authoritarianism, the kind of masculine dreams of the 1920s and 1930s. ‘It was about simple solutions to very complex problems, the idea that one man could wave a magic wand and make everything better again.’.
Trump listed a few issues he plans to address ‘immediately’, ranging from border security to America’s involvement in overseas conflict. He’s made grandiose statements regarding changes he plans to make – from ending the war in Ukraine and bringing peace to the Middle East, to flat-out ending inflation in America.
