Amid the grind of daily routines and dwindling motivation, a poll of 2,000 adults has found that two-thirds of Brits feel unfulfilled in their personal lives. The study, commissioned by the British Heart Foundation (BHF), revealed that 27% believe taking on a mental and physical challenge could provide purpose, while a quarter think starting a new hobby might help.

Dan Geneen, head of fundraising at the BHF, commented: “Feeling unfulfilled isn’t uncommon, but it’s great to see so many people want to change this.”. Although Brits are keen to change things up, 21% said they were unlikely to do so, citing barriers such as a lack of time (32%), low confidence (28%), and feeling too old (27%) as reasons not to.

Confidence remains a key challenge, with a third (33%) saying they struggle to step out of their comfort zone. Interestingly, 18% said they were more likely to stick to a resolution that benefits others rather than themselves. Additionally, three-quarters of respondents agreed they would be more committed to goals that are mentally fulfilling.

The desire to contribute to others’ well-being was also a factor, with 59% emphasising the importance of giving back to their local community and 53% expressing a wish to do more for charity. Dan Geneen noted that small steps can pave the way for bigger achievements: “Small steps like making time for more exercise and fresh air, as well as setting yourself a challenge like signing up to charity events within your community can really help give you that sense of purpose.”.
