Brits have been placed on snow alert ahead of a Nordic blizzard set to make landfall in a matter of days and blast several dozen UK counties and regions. Snowfall has appeared on the radar of UK weather forecasters in recent days as the brisk chill of winter refuses to depart ahead of spring, with temperatures trending downwards and developing precipitation powered over the coast by heavy winds. New maps have revealed the clutch of areas most likely to see snowfall as a blizzard makes its way south on Valentines Day.
A massive "Scandinavian freeze" looks set to sweep the country, according to the latest maps from WXCharts, which show that nearly 70 areas will be caught in its grasp. Smatterings of purple and white on the service's charts suggest every single home nation is in the storm's path. The maps, created using data from MetDesk, show the ice-blast will freeze 30 different counties across England, 18 of Wales' 22 principle areas, 24 Scottish council areas, and all of Northern Ireland's six counties. While snow looks likely to surge across the country, some areas will end up harder hit than others.
Areas situated on the highest ground will see the most, with up to 8cm (3.14 inches) falling in Scotland, and 6cm (2.36 inches) of settled snow in North Wales. England's northwest coast is set for the least agreeable conditions, with freezing rain likely to hit the area as temperatures plummet below -1C. Despite being famously bone-chillingly cold between January and February, Northern Ireland will see comparatively little snow, around 1cm per hour on February 14. Temperatures will also be comparatively warmer, just below 0C, higher than some parts of southern England.
