Parts of the United Kingdom were blanketed by snow in the early hours of Sunday and many sporting fixtures will fall victim to the weather. The snow has impacted travel across the country, with Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Liverpool John Lennon and Birmingham Airports all closing their runways. The UK's roads and train network has also been affected, with a severe weather warning issued by the Met Office after 25cm of snow fell in some areas.
It is a nightmare situation for those hoping to attend sporting events, or play in grassroots fixtures. Travelling fans face potential late postponements, with pitch inspections taking place this morning before a decision is taken by officials. The biggest fixture of the day undoubtedly comes at Anfield, where Liverpool are hoping to host Manchester United in a Premier League blockbuster. However, the match is currently up in the air, with Liverpool City Council's Safety Advisory Group set to hold a meeting at 12pm to determine whether or not the game can go ahead.
Liverpool said in a statement: "A safety meeting was held this morning to assess the weather and travel conditions for today’s fixture against Manchester United at Anfield. "At this stage the match is planned to go ahead as normal and every effort is being made to get the game on. A further safety meeting will take place again at midday to assess the latest conditions. We will update supporters just as soon as we can. Please take extra care out there, Reds.".
