New weather maps show the exact time Britain is set to be hammered by a deluge of heavy rain and snow as a cold and wet conditions return. The last week has seen milder conditions after the New Year got off to a freezing start, with temperatures reaching -18.9 in Scotland last Saturday. The chilling temperatures marked the coldest January temperature overnight since 2010, when temperatures dropped below -15C several times at locations across the UK, including -22.3C on January 8 in Altnaharra in the Highlands.

But the wet winter weather is set to return in a matter of days as the mercury plummets - covering the entirety of the UK, while some areas will see snowfall. According to the latest maps from weather service WXCharts, south west England, the Midlands and Wales will see between 2 and 5mm of rainfall per hour on Friday 24 January, from 6am.

Meanwhile, the maps suggest the east coast of Scotland will be hit by 2cm snow of per hour. The west coast of Scotland, and the Highlands, will up to 10cm of rain per hour, according to the graphic map. Previous maps from WXCharts show how just one day later on Saturday, January 25, a chilling system will move in from the Atlantic bringing both rain showers and snow as a big freeze returns to our shores The snow is tracked to move across Wales, into northern England, and eventually onto Scotland.
