Summary at a Glance

Trump's inauguration and transfer of power Donald Trump will soon be sworn in as the next US president on inauguration day, following the Republican’s success over Democrat candidate Kamala Harris in November's election.

President Joe Biden will remain in power until the inauguration, despite the 81-year-old dropping out of the 2024 presidential race back in July to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris.

On inauguration day, Trump will legally assume the role of president, most likely outside the Capitol building in Washington DC where the US government, known as Congress, is based.

It is typical of the outgoing president to accompany the president-elect to the Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony before addressing the nation in a speech as president one final time.

Previously serving as the 45th president for one term between 2017 and 2021, and famously becoming one of three presidents in history to be impeached, the president-elect will again take office in 2025.
