A few years ago, vegans undoubtedly had the short straw when looking to eat out in restaurants - and would often need to opt for a plain and unsatisfying meal. Flash forward to 2025, and reports suggest that as many as 1.8 million people signed up to take part in this year's 'Veganuary' while dedicated vegan restaurants have sprung up across the UK.

Now, vegetarian diners say the quality of their meals have been sacrificed at the 'expense' of providing vegan food options, with cheese and dairy being rare finds on menus. Many restaurants have been offering just one meat free option in a bid to cater to both vegetarians and vegans - something diners have branded 'lazy'.

These are often highly-processed 'beyond meat' alternatives, which have been slammed by experts as 'nutritionally poor'. Vegetarians have also been hit with extra charges if they want to add cheese to a vegan meal or, if there is a solely vegetarian meal, it will likely be macaroni cheese.

Burger restaurants appear particularly to blame, with Byron Burger offering a vegan alternative to each of their meat options - but only one solely vegetarian option (the 'big cheese'). Fat Hippo meanwhile offers a selection of vegan burgers, though customers can ask for it to be 'relaxed' to veggie.
